Adult Problem Gambling Program

This program addresses the needs of individuals presenting with gambling problems. Assessment and individual counselling are offered at all of Pavillon Foster’s outpatient sites.  Brief stabilization or short term inpatient care is also offered in the case of more severe problems.

The assessment process is aimed at evaluating the nature and severity of the client’s gambling behaviour. This evaluation is followed by a detailed ‘session analysis’ which is used to identify key aspects of the client’s gambling behaviour, such as cognitive distortions, superstitious beliefs and behaviours, and physiological and emotional experiences that prompt, follow, and/or maintain the gambling. The treatment program is aimed at changing the thoughts and behaviours that are fundamental to gambling behaviour. The focus is on:

  • Correcting cognitive distortions about gambling;
  • Developing problem solving skills;
  • Teaching social and coping skills;
  • Relapse prevention.
